HLTH101 Overview of the Health Care Industry

Course Description

This undergraduate course covers the conceptual basis for the health care industry, the structure of the US health service systems and their functions, and operations and service deliveries to populations and individuals. It discusses the issues with the US health care system and other countries’ health care systems and the efforts in health care reform.

I have been teaching this course at CSUCI for two years now both in the online and traditional classroom formats. However, I taught the same course online elsewhere for a couple of years prior to that. Additionally, I have nearly 19 years of industry experience.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic structures and operations of the health care industry in the US
2. Describe the impact of the health care industry on the US economy and its people
3. Explain the health care financing mechanisms
4. Identify major issues in the health care delivery
5. Compare the US health care system with that of another country and analyze the differences

Description of QLT Course Design

The syllabus clearly indicates the one required text and the one recommended text. The syllabus is provided in CI Docs with a link from Canvas, supporting student navigation by making the process easy and straight forward.

Description of QLT Course Design

The course includes a variety of instructional material. There are mini-lectures provided by myself that I recorded in the FIT Studio. There are links to external websites that supplement the other course material. There are also articles uploaded in PDF format for the students. This will help student learning because it reinforces that course objectives through different modalities and repetition.
