HLTH101 Overview of the Health Care Industry

Course Description

This undergraduate course covers the conceptual basis for the health care industry, the structure of the US health service systems and their functions, and operations and service deliveries to populations and individuals. It discusses the issues with the US health care system and other countries’ health care systems and the efforts in health care reform.

I have been teaching this course at CSUCI for two years now both in the online and traditional classroom formats. However, I taught the same course online elsewhere for a couple of years prior to that. Additionally, I have nearly 19 years of industry experience.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic structures and operations of the health care industry in the US
2. Describe the impact of the health care industry on the US economy and its people
3. Explain the health care financing mechanisms
4. Identify major issues in the health care delivery
5. Compare the US health care system with that of another country and analyze the differences

- Objective 4.1: At the beginning of the course, instructor provides an opportunity to have students self-introduce to develop the sense of community.

Description of QLT Course Design

At the beginning of the course, I provide an introduction of myself and an introduction discussion board from the students to interact with each other and myself. My self-introduction is provided on the course homepage and the students' introduction discussion board is provided in Module 1. These facilitate a sense of community and support from me.

- Objective 4.3: Navigation throughout the online components of the course is logical, consistent, and efficient.

Description of QLT Course Design

The home page of the course provides a direct link to the syllabus and a video of myself walking the students through the course modules, content, and resources. Additionally, the Modules provide an introduction/overview mini-lecture and the other material is organized based on the relevant concepts and easy to navigate. This make the material easy for the students to locate and utilize while facilitating learning.
