Course Description

This Nursing Research course promotes clinical decision making, based on evidence, through the exploration and integration of current scientific evidence, use of clinical reasoning, identification of ethical issues, and assessment of available resources. It introduces students to the nursing research process and helps to develop skills in reading, analyzing, and critiquing research to promote an understanding of the importance of research in nursing. The course focuses on research design and the analysis and synthesis of evidence to answer a clinical question relevant to nursing practice and patient centered care.

In this course, we will be discussing the role of research in nursing practice and how you can have a positive impact on patient care outcomes using the best evidence available to guide patient care decisions.

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to:

Examine the interrelationship among theory, evidence-based practice, and research in nursing and the significance to practice.
Differentiate between quality improvement, research, and evidence-based practice.
Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research methods, processes, and outcomes.
Discuss the steps in the research process.
Employ strategies to retrieve, appraise, and synthesize evidence to address a practice/clinical issue/problem.
Describe the purpose of the literature review in qualitative and quantitative research.
Explore the use theoretical frameworks and nursing models of care used to develop research models.
Evaluate the credibility of sources of evidence from nursing research literature including but not limited to internet resources.
Examine how evidence is used to inform and support the development of healthcare policies; ethics; standards and practices; and quality and safety measures.
Discuss the factors that are important in selection of appropriate statistics for analysis.

This course is required for completion of the baccalaureate degree in the nursing program. Last semester, I taught this course face-to-face with students in the classroom setting and also facilitated online learning critical thinking activities. Although this is not an online course it includes online assignments and learning.
