Cons of mobile devices for online learning

Phones do have their limits and aren’t meant to replace a computer. Some cons of smartphones for learning are:

Smaller screen– hard to work with multiple tabs open
Not all websites or programs work well on a phone– some things need to be done on a computer
Can be difficult to type longer passages
Distracting notifications

In general, phones are great for helping you learn and capture ideas during the “in between” moments of life where you might be on the go, waiting, or away from the computer. Having your phone with you means you are able to stay in the loop and communicate with your classmates (or instructor) and check due dates no matter where you are.

Pros and cons of computers for online learning

Computers have their advantages and are work well for most online learning tasks because of their pros:

Larger screen– easy to work with multiple tabs open
Keyboard– easier to sit down and write longer passages, easier to write formulas
Larger memory storage– can handle larger files
Most third party apps and sites used at CSUCI will work smoothly on a computer

Computers have their cons:

Not easily portable– they aren’t always easy to bring with us wherever we go
Needs to be connected to wifi to do most tasks– if the wifi goes out a computer may not be as useful for you, some tasks can be only be completed online

Computers are a great “home base” for working, accessing your course, and joining Zoom meetings. Computers are great for when you need to work while looking at more than one tab or window at a time (ex. while you’re in a Zoom lecture and taking notes on a Google Doc, or looking at slides as a reference while writing an essay). If you’re away from a computer (as many of us are during large chunks of the day), it’s important to have a way to stay connected to your course if needed.

If you need access to a computer, you can work on a computer at Broome Library or, if there is availability, rent out a laptop for a semester. You can also explore what is available at your local community library, most public libraries have computers that are free to use. Find your local public library here!

Mobile devices are just one of many pieces of learning online

Whatever device(s) you use (smartphone, tablet, shared computer, your own computer), it’s important to think about how you will use them together in a way that works smoothly for your lifestyle and the way you learn. There might be some times where your phone is your best option, and there might be some times where a computer is your friend. The right balance will be up to you. This module is meant to help you learn about your different options so you can explore your preferences and figure out what works the best for you.
