WHY TO USE THIS CANVAS SHELL

The purpose of this Canvas shell is to offer you high-quality, no-cost resources that can be used in lieu of a traditional (and expensive!) textbook. Before the creation of this Canvas shell, the average Public Speaking textbook at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) cost a staggering $149.64. That means by using the resources found within this Canvas shell, you are helping save CSUCI students nearly $100,000 each and every academic year - while simultaneously assigning resources that more closely align with your specific SLOs and curricular interests.

HOW TO USE THIS CANVAS SHELL

1) Quick-start Option:

Within the Modules link, you'll find a Quick-Start Option that includes the (1) Full Text, (2) PowerPoint Slides, and (3) Chapter Quizzes for Fundamentals of Public Speaking (Rice, 2017).

Fundamentals of Public Speaking is an Open Education Resource (OER) curated by Dr. Tammera S. Rice, Associate Professor of Communication at College of the Canyons. Nearly 20 scholars from across the globe have contributed to this text. Several of its chapters are updated content from the acclaimed Public Speaking Project, and all chapters conclude with Review Questions & Activities, Glossary of Terms, and Reference List.

Because of its creative commons licensing, you are free to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and/or redistribute this text and its teacher resources however you please.

2) Customizable Option:

If you're more interested in creating your own personalized reading list, the Modules link also includes a Customizable Option. This option consists of 21 modules in total. Each module contains a list of potential (1) Readings, (2) Videos, and (3) Activities for you to choose from. Each module is also dedicated to one specific content area within Public Speaking:

Module #4: "Diversity & Inclusion"

Module #5: "Speech Ethics"

Module #6: "Listening Effectively"

Module #11: "Speech Anxiety"

Module #12: "Speech Delivery"

Module #13: "Visual Aids"

Module #14: "Informative Speaking"

Module #15: "Ceremonial Speaking"

Module #16: "Persuasive Speaking"

Module #17: "Professional Presentations"

Module #18: "Group Presentations"

Module #19: "Stories & Storytelling"

Module #20: "Spoken Word"

Module #21: "Journalistic Broadcasting"

To create your own customized reading list, you can choose the specific module(s) you want to use in class, and the specific resource(s) you want to use from each module. You can then remove or unpublish any additional content from your students' view. (The expectation is not for anyone to attempt utilizing all 21 modules or all 189 resources).

Any changes you make here will not affect the original Canvas shell published to Canvas Commons, nor will any of your changes be seen by anyone else who uses the orginal Canvas shell for themselves.

In future semesters, you can quickly and easy copy all of the edits you make here into your new class sections. All of your edits and changes will already be there for you; there'll be no need to import the original shell from Canvas Commons ever again.

3) Additional Options:

You're also free to use a combination of options listed above. You could, for instance, use the Quick Start Guide as a foundation for your course. Just as you might with a traditional textbook, however, you might choose to supplement that text with a reading from Module #4: Diversity & Inclusion, or a video from Module #6: Listening Effectively, etc.

Finally, if you're someone who wants even more choices than the Quick-Start Option or Customizable Option have to offer, you'll find additional resources for each content module within Files. Have at it.
